Abstract

Background. Dental caries remains a significant problem for poor children in Indonesia. Dental caries is associated with oral pathogens and Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) is one of the primary cariogenic organisms. Therefore, one strategy for treating dental caries is to suppress streptococcus mutans. Chewing gum can reduce the salivary Streptococcus mutans levels by its mechanical cleansing and secretion of saliva which contains several ions for remineralization. Purpose. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of probiotic chewing gum in salivary S. mutans levels in children (age 9-12). Method. Thirty-three children were randomly assigned into the probiotic group, sugar-free group, and the control group. The probiotic group chewed gum sweetened only with Biogaia (contains Lactobacillus reuteri 2x108 CFU/tablet, distributed by PT Kalbe Farma), The sugar-free chewed gum sweetened only with group Trident (Cadbury Adams USA ) once a day for two weeks. S. mutans counts were tested by total colony forming unit methods after three weeks. Results. The shift from higher S. mutans scores to lower was greater in the probiotic group than in the sugar-free group and control group (p<0.05). Conclusion. This study supports the suggestion that chewing probiotic gum may reduce salivary S. mutans levels. Probiotic chewing gum may provide a feasible caries prevention method for children.
