Abstract

Backgroud. One of the main reason for someone to have an orthodontic treatmentis to fix their appearance. For children, the desire to have an orthodontic treatment is influenced by parent’s assessment. Purpose. The aim of this study was to determine schoolchildren, their parents, and a dentist differed in assessment of dentofacial appearance in SDN Kenjeran 248 (suburban) and SDN Kertajaya (Urban). Method. Data were collected from 53 schoolchildren, 11-12 years old as a sample (23 samples from SDN Kenjeran 248 and 30 samples from SDN Kertajaya). The Aesthetic Component (AC) photograph from IOTN was used by children independently, their parents and the dentist to assess the children appearance. Result. The general Aesthetic Component assessment by the dentist, schoolchildren, and their parents is different from each other with Kruskal Wallis p<0,05 (p=0,000). however specific assessment between dentist with schoolchildren and their parents using Mann Whitney shows the different with p<0,05. A different result was shown in assessment by the schoolchildren and their parents where there is no significant differed with p>0,05. Conlusion. Most of schoolchildren rated themselves more attractive than assessment by the dentist. And most of the parents also rate their children dentofacial appearance is quite good enough than assessment by the dentist
