Abstract

Background Pain in dentistry is often treated with drugs that enter the class of NSAIDs (Non Steroid Anti Inflammation Drugs). Siwak has several active ingredients, such as trimethylamine and tannins that have an analgesic effect that is expected to replace the function of NSAID that has some bad side effects to health. Purpose The objective of this study was to determine the analgesic effect of siwak wood extract (Salvadora Persica) on mice which induced by acetic acid. Methods Twenty eight males of mice were divided into four groups, one control group and three treatment groups which given siwak wood extract in different concentrations (12,5%, 25%, 50%). Then each group was induced by acetic acid. Five minutes later writhing reflex for 30 minutes, counted and recorded. Results The mean of writhing reflex in the three groups were given the siwak wood extract (Salvadora Persica) is lower than the control group and there is significant difference writhing reflex between the control group were given aquades with siwak wood extract with concentration of 12.5%, 25%, and 50% with a significance of 0.000 (p <0.05). Conclusion Siwak wood extract (Salvadora Persica) has analgesic effect in mice which induced by acetic acid.
