Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of black cumin (Nigella sativa) extract on liver histopathological features of white rats (Rattus novergicus) with type-1 diabetes mellitus (DM). Twenty five, two to three month old male rats were randomly divided into five groups. Rats in negative control group were injected with physioligical saline while the others were injected with 150 mg/kg bw of alloxan to induce type-1 diabetes mellitus. Rats in positive control group were not treated while alloxan induced diabetic rats were treated with black cumin (Nigella sativa) extract at the dose of 5, 10, and 15 g/kg bw respectively. Black cumin (Nigella sativa) extract was given orally for 14 days, then rats were necropsied for liver samples collection followed by histopathological examination. Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney test on histopathological examination of the rats liver indicated no difference among control and treated groups. Black cumin (Nigella sativa) treatment did not change liver histopathological features of rats with type-1 diabetes mellitus.
