Abstract

FSW (Female Sex Workers) is one of the high risk group for HIV, they frequently change partners in sexual intercourse and unsafe sex. One of the prevention and treatment of HIV is VCT (Voluntary Counselling and Testing). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the quality and content of pre-testing counseling at VCT Putat Jaya Surabaya. The design of the study was descriptive. The subject of research is the implementation of pre-testing counseling at VCT Putat Jaya Surabaya, while the respondents were all clients (FSW) at VCT Putat Jaya Surabaya for the first time pre-testing counseling during the month of April to June 2012, where the evaluation is performed on three counselors. The variables of this study were the quality of counseling (including interpersonal relations between counselors and clients, gathering information from clients, providing information on the client, and dealing with special circumstances), the content of counseling, and FWS’s knowledge before and after pre-testing counseling. These results indicate that 78.7% of respondents assess the quality of pretesting counseling is good, where 72.3% of respondents assess the interpersonal relationships between counselors and clients is good, 85.1% of respondents assess the skills of the counselor to gather information is good, 55.3% of respondents assess counselor’s skills in providing information is good, 87.2% of respondents assess counselor skills in dealing with special circumstances is pretty good. In addition, 66% of respondents assess good in the content of pre-testing counseling. The results also showed that only 14.9% of respondents who have increased knowledge after receiving pre-testing counseling. Suggestion of this research is counselors more emphasis on the client that the HIV / AIDS is not transmitted through sharing food and mosquito bites, counselors explore client’s understanding of HIV / AIDS with not only limited to a closed question, and conduct regular evaluation to maintain the quality of counseling.
