Abstract

Swimming pool water is water in the pool which is used for swimming whose quality meets the health standards stated in Permenkes No. 416/Menkes/Per/IX/1990 about water quality conditions and monitoring. Water quality pools that are not eligible may cause health concerns for the pool users. This study aimed to identify the quality of the pool water and eye irritation and skin complaints of Surabaya Kenjeran pool users. This study is an observational study with cross sectional descriptive approach. The population of the study was all of the pool visitors in Kenjeran Surabaya. The research sample included the water in the adult pool in Kenjeran Surabaya (pH and residual chlorine) and the users of Surabaya Kenjeran pool (100 respondents). The variables observed were the water quality of the pool, the maintenance of the water quality of the pool, and the characteristics, the habit, and also the complaints of the swimming-pool users. The results of the water quality assessment of Kenjeran swimming pool does not meet the requirements of Permenkes 416/Menkes/Per/IX/1990 for the parameters of the smell, floating objects, clarity, and residual chlorine. The maintenance of water quality of Kenjeran pool uses the method of filtration, disinfection using chlorine gas and chlorine and deck level circulatory system. Most of the pool users are aged 10-20 years, male sex, and most of whom don’t get sore eyes and skin before by respectively 81% and 91%. The total of users who don’t use the APD is 74%, the personal hygiene is good and the duration of swimming is approximately 3-4 hours. Health complaints from users of Kenjeran pool are eye irritation at the most by 42% and skin irritation by 27%. The conclusion of this study is that the Kenjeran pool water has not met the requirements of Permenkes No. 416/Menkes/Per/IX/1990. The Kenjeran pool manager is suggested to pay more attention to the maintenance of water systems and pool users should use personal protective equipment while swimming to prevent health complaints.
