Abstract

Zinc is one of the micro minerals that is needed by the body metabolism including protein. Zinc deficiency can cause various consequences such as loss appetite, protein deficiency and decreasing immunity. This condition are more problems among children under five years old. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effect of zinc supplementation on high dosage vitamin A supplementation in under five children toward nutritional status that were weight for height z-score (WHZ) and weight for age z-score (WAZ) in Mojo District, Gubeng, Surabaya city. Moreover, this study also had purposes for le arning under five children ch aracteristics, under five children’s family and maternal characteristics. This study was experimental research, using Randomized Controlled Trial Pre Test-Post Test Control Group Design and a double blind among 26 under five children age 12-60 months. Data were collected with questionnaire for under five children’s char acteristics, under five children’s family characteristics and maternal characteristics data, whereas anthropometric data such as weight and height were collected using anthropometric measurement. Data analysis used independent samples t-test to understand difference among trial group and control group before and after supplementation. Paired samples t-test to understand difference among before and after supplementation in both of groups. Resu lt showed that significant difference happened before and after supplementation on WAZ (p = 0,003) in trial group and there was an effect that significant on WAZ among trial and control group (p= 0,048). There was also significant differe nce in trial group on WHZ (p = 0,002). However, there was no significant di fference on WHZ among trial and control groups after 45 days supplementation (p = 0,099). From this study can be conclude d that zinc supplementation in under five children for 45 days may give effect on nutriti onal status (WAZ) however can’t on WHZ. So, it can be recommended that zinc supplementation will be given together with vitamin A supplementation more than 45 days. Moreover, it’s necessary to held promo tion to increase moth er’s knowledge about under five children’s nutrition for getting optimum growth.
