Abstract

Optimal development of the child requires good parenting. Marriage at an early age influence mother's understanding on the patterns of growth and parenting, which affect children's health and nutritional status. This research was conducted in Tegalsiwalan, Tegalsiwalan subdistrict, Probolinggo because of high occurance of early marriages and prevalance of malnutrition status among children. This research aimed to analyze the relationship between early marriage mother parenting (under 19 years old) and the nutritional status of toddlers. This research was an observational research with a population of mothers that married at an early age and had a toddler that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria as many as 36 individuals. The samples were 33 respondents, chosen using simple random sampling. Independent variables were maternal characteristics, family characteristics, characteristics of toddlers, mother parenting, consumption patterns of toddlers, consumption levels of toddlers, and nutritional status of toddlers. The dependent variable was the nutritional status of children. Analysis was done using Spearman correlation test. The results showed that variables had relationship included age of first marriage with child nutritional status based on weight/age (p = 0,013), feeding (nutrition) with child nutritional status based on weight/age (p = 0,047), and height/age (p = 0,037). Conclusion for this research was that the age of first marriage and feeding(nutrition) had relationship with less body weight and shorter height among the toddlers. Advice that it was suggested to attempt family planning by postpone marriage until the age of 19 years old for mother therefore mother will be more ready prepare and to give information needed related to appropriate feeding for toddlers.
