Abstract
Surabaya is a city with the highest HIV-AIDS case in East Java. Risky sexual behavior is one of the causes of the increasing incidence of HIV-AIDS. Transgender is a group which has high risk of contracting and transmitting HIV. Bargaining power of transgender in the use of condoms is still weak. This study aimed to analyze the driving and inhibiting factor of bargaining power of transgender in using condoms. This study was a descriptive observational with qualitative approach and cross sectional design research. The determination of informants used purposive sampling There were 9 informants to accomplish this study. The obtained data were collected by indepth interviews and presented in the form of descriptive and narrative. Factors which were driving the bargaining power of transgender in the use of condoms are the background knowledge of HIV-AIDS and the benefits of condoms; attitude that always suggests, requires the use of condoms, and rejects sexual partner; perceptions about the vulnerability of contracting HIV-AIDS and the benefits of condoms; the adequate availability of condoms; Perwakos support in the form of mandatory rules of condoms by giving free condoms and counseling; regular partner support by giving motivation; customers support such as bringing their own condoms and asking to use condoms. Contrary, factors which were inhibiting the bargaining power of transgender prostitutes are indifferent attitude toward information about HIV-AIDS and condom’s benefits; the seeking of pleasure, since condoms are considered as a nuisance intimacy during sex especially with their regular partner; habitual among transgender; customers who refuse to use condoms; consumer’s perception that they are free from any sexual disease; refuse to use for customer satisfactions. Training and counseling in the use of condoms are needed to increase the bargaining power amongst transgender. Giving information about the basic knowledge of HIV-AIDS and the dangers of free sex to society is needed as well especially to those who could potentially be a transgender’s sex partner.
