Abstract

Based on data Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration in the fourth quarter of 2014 there were 17.859 accidents. The construction sector is the biggest contributor of accidents. One of the causes of the high number accidents was the lack of compliance of workers using personal protective equipment. The objective of this research was to study the related factors to compliance of using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to the project workers of One East Residence apartment building at PT. Tatamulia Nusantara Indah. The research was an analytic study by applied cross sectional design. The samples were 46 of people consisting of excavating workers, carpenters, iron workers, concrete workers, and steel welding workers. The independent variables were predisposing factors (knowledge, years of work, education level, attitude), enabling factors (availability and convenience of PPE), and reinforcing factors (regulations and supervision of PPE). The dependent variable was the compliance of using PPE. The research instruments consisted of questionnaires, interview and observation sheet. The result showed that there were significant correlation among predisposing factors (knowledge and attitude) with compliance of using PPE, and there were no significant correlation among education level and length of work with compliance of using PPE. Enabling factors (availability and convenience of PPE) had no significant correlation with compliance of using PPE. There were significant correlation between reinforcing factors (regulations of PPE) with compliance of using PPE, and supervison of PPE had no significant correlation with compliance of using PPE. The recommendation to reduce accidents is the workers have to obey the company regulations especially the obligation of using PPE properly.
