Abstract

One of the production factors in the company is workers. The main reason of working accidents are because of workers unsafe behavior and incompliance in the use of Personal Protective Equipments (PPE). This research to learn factor that related to compliance of using PPE in Krebet Baru I Sugar Plant, Malang. This study applied cross sectional design using observational approach. The population under study was all workers in the sugar plant. Sampling was done using simple random sampling technique and a number of 44 respondents were thus obtained. Data collection was performed using questionnaires, interviews and observation checklist in regards to compliance of the use of PPE. The dependent variable was compliance of the use of PPE while independent variables were namely individual characteristics (age, education, tenure), predisposing factors (knowledge and attitudes), enabling factors (availability of PPE, training concerning to PPE) and reinforcing factors (supervision, and regulations concerning to PPE). Chi square test was used to determine the relationship between the independent variables and the dependent ones. The results of this study showed that most of the respondents were of 41 to 60 years old with high school level of education and had tenures of more than 10 years. Respondents possess sufficient knowledge and good attitude towards the use of PPE. PPEs were available, complete and sufficient in number and training concerning to PPE existed and had been followed by the respondents. Most of the respondents stated that the supervision concerning to PPE was not scheduled and no regulations existed concerning to PPE. Respondents who did not comply in the use of PPE amounted to 61.4%. There was a correlation between age and compliance of the use of PPE (p-value = 0.001), knowledge and the compliance of the use of PPE (p-value = 0.03), and the attitude and of the compliance of the use of PPE (p-value = 0.000). Education, tenure, availability of PPE, training concerning to PPE, supervision and regulations concerning to PPE, had no relationship with compliance of use of PPE (p > 0.005). Based of the findings above, it is advised that the company to perform regular supervision and to apply firm policies with sanctions being imposed to workers that do not comply in the use of PPE.
