Abstract

Grinding machine is one of machine that causes vibration. Vibration that exceeds NAB can reduce comfort, lowering productivity of work and result to occupational diseases. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is occupational diseases that arise because gap in bottom arm to wrist the narrowing of causing taste tingling, pain, numb, stiff hand until hand muscle weak. The various of these complaints can limit to function of the wrist. It is necessary to study that related with CTS symptoms in grinding workers at PT DOK dan Perkapalan Surabaya. The purpose of this study is to analyze the related factor with symptoms of CTS in grinding workers at PT DOK dan Perkapalan Surabaya. Based on the type of study included analytical research using observational methods. By the time included in the cross-sectional study. The collection of data using structure interview methods, observation and measurement. The population in the study were all part grinding workers at PT DPS total 43 people with a sample total 39 people. The dependent variable in the study were symptoms of CTS in grinding workers. The independent variables were the intensity of the vibration, individual characteristics include age, employment position of the hand, the use of PPE, BMI, years of service, length of employment, smoking and exercise habits. The results of this study amounted to 87.2% of respondents had symptoms of CTS. The most symptoms of CTS at the age of 26-45 years with years of service >10 years and length of employment 2-<4 hours, and the intensity of the vibration that exceeds NAB of 10-12 m/s2 for 2-8 hours. The relationships between variables were tested using chi-square test and spearman test. The conclusion of this study was there were a fairly strong relationship between CTS symptoms with age and years of service, there were a moderate relationship between CTS symptoms with used of PPE and there were a strong relationship between the intensity of vibration grinding machine with CTS symptoms in Grinding Workers at PT DPS. The company was expected to provide control over the grinding machine vibration, providing education about the importance of the use of PPE such as gloves made from foam and seek job rotation to minimize exposure to vibration.
