Abstract

Data from BPOM showed that more than 99% of pupils consumed school snacks to gain their energy while in school. However, snacks that sold on school should be alerted. Based on BPOM surveilanced in 2008-2010, 40-44% of the sample tested proved that school snacks were not qualified as abuse of hazardous materials and microbial contamination or food additives which exceed the limit. This study aimed to determine rhodamine B and cyclamate in school snacks and health complaints of pupils in KB Az-Zahra Sidoarjo. This research was an observational descriptive with cross sectional design. Simple random sampling technique was used to determine the samples of population. 40 parents of the students and 4 sellers in KB Az-Zahra Sidoarjo were interviewed. The sample consisted of 4 types of snacks and tested in two ways, organoleptic test and qualitative and quantitative laboratory test to determine the content of Rhodamine B and cyclamate. Some health complaints had been gotten by 12 pupils (30%) after consuming school snacks which were sold in KB Az-Zahra Sidoarjo. 10 pupils (83,33%) had gotten cough, 1 pupil (8,33%) had gotten itch/pain in the throat, and 1 pupil (8,33%) had gotten abdominal pain. Among fourth school snacks which were tested, there was a school snack, called es potong, contained cyclamate with 218,75 ppm. The conclusion of this research was synthetic sweetener such as cyclamate still used by traders. Awareness of parents was needed to choose safe school snacks for their children.
