Abstract

PT. X is an Indonesian company that is involved in construction and now is working on construction project in West Surabaya. Observation result showed that the majority of accidents occured due to unsafe actions. This study was conducted to analyze the correlation of basic cause factors and management factor with unsafe actions of finishing construction worker on the building project at PT. X in West Surabaya. Basic cause factors such as individual characteristics (age, education, years of work, work experience), work stress, controlling and management factor is work instruction. This was an observasional study with cross sectional design. The sample was 63 workers from 74 finishing workers using simple random sampling technique. Data was collected through observation and questionnaires to workers. Correlation was tested using the Spearman test. The result showed that most workers have moderate and low unsafe actions as much as 38,1%. There was a relation between basic cause with unsafe actions include work experience (sig=0,000), knowledge (sig=0,038), work stress (sig=0,023) and controlling (sig=0,000). There was a relation between management factor that is work instruction (sig=0,000) with unsafe actions. It can be concluded that the longer work experience the lower unsafe actions, the better knowledge the lower unsafe actions, the higher work stress the higher unsafe action, the better controlling the lower unsafe action and better work instruction of worker the lower unsafe actions. Unsafe action can be reduced by routine inspection in project area by management, increasing knowledge with giving training of safety and health environment, managed of workload, job hours and periodically evaluation of work instruction
