Abstract

The research has been conducted to manufacture hydrogel membrane of chitosan crosslinked glutaraldehyde for wound dressing application. The preparation of hydrogel membrane was made by mixing 1% chitosan with 0,1M glutaraldehyde solution. The addition of glutaraldehyde was served to improve the mechanical properties of chitosan. Chitosan crosslinked glutaraldehyde hydrogel membranes are characterized by the membrane pH, presence of functional crosslinked membrane by FTIR, the ability of absorption membranes, membrane strength, and the ability of membrane in wound healing. The result showed that the effects of adding the composition of glutaraldehyde made the mechanical properties of hydrogel membrane better than chitosan that shown on the tensile strength of the membrane. Membrane absorption was decreased with many compositions of glutaraldehyde. Hydrogel membrane can act in the wound healing process. However, the addition of glutaraldehyde does not change the pH value. This research showed that chitosan-glutaraldehyde hydrogel membrane 50:5 was better to be applied for wound dressing application that had pH 5, absorption membrane 161,7449%, and membrane strength 19,385.106 N/m2.
