Abstract

This thesis basically tries to find linguistic method to analyze whether a text can be considered as a joke or not. The main objects of the thesis are eleven texts included in a chapter called Spoof in the English work sheets of SMUN 4 Surabaya. The respondents are the students on the eleventh year of SMUN 4 Surabaya. They provide the thesis with the opinion of what's funny or not on their perspectives. This research uses qualitative method. The study uses the theory of Semantic script-based theory of humor. The result of the study shows that three out of eleven texts in the Spoof text cannot be considered as joke-carrying text and the main obstacles of understanding jokes are the lack of vocabulary mastery and the length of the texts.
