Abstract

This study attempts to present a study about a novel entitled The Inheritance of Loss written by Kiran Desai. The novel portrays some characters. Yet, this study focuses on one of Indian characters known as the Judge who articulates the post-colonial experiences of a colonized man who is always treated as the oppressed figure in the colonizer’s land, England. Regarding to the issue above, the study is aimed to present unhomeliness as the effect of being oppressed figure that is always considered as Other even the Judge mimics the colonizer. Nevertheless on his returning to India, the judge becomes a changed man that provokes estranging sense both in his internal feeling and people in his surrounding. By exploring the issues, the postcolonial theory is used to analyze the issues which are discussed in this study. Therefore, postcolonial theorist Homi K. Bhaba is considered as a proper key theorist. The study finds that the Judge is an oppressed figure in the colonizer’s land. On the other hand, the Judge also finds difficulty in the relocation of home in his homeland, India. Keyterms: Othering, mimicry, unhomeliness.
