Abstract

A Chinese woman is problematic individual in Indonesia who gets much discrimination in Indonesia. Chinese woman in Indonesia have faced much discrimination in terms of social life provided by government and education access provided by their family. In other side, narrative is called as one way of reporting past events. Culture has a correlation with narrative because cultural forces guide speakers through the process of narrating their lives. In this thesis, the researcher tries to find the narrative structure of Chinese homemaker and compare it with Labov’s narrative structure. The study aims to find the indication that different culture will make a difference or similarity to its narrative structure. The data on this study is collected through an interview of a life story that tells about the past events of the Chinese homemaker. The researcher asks the interviewee eight episodes in her life that followed the Guided Autobiography by McAdams. Then, the data is recorded and transcribed into written form. The written data is analyzed by using Labov’s narrative structure. Researcher makes sub-stories of the interviewee’s life story and then dividing the story into six elements of the narrative structure, abstract, orientation, complicating action, evaluation, resolution, and coda. Finally, the researcher can draw from the findings about the difference of Chinese woman’s narrative structure to Labov’s narrative structure. The findings show that some of the elements are absent and some of them are present.
