Abstract

This study concerns with the application of Communicative Language Teaching (CLT). The writer identified the application of CLT by the English Teacher in English Teaching at SMA Negeri 7 Surabaya. Furthermore, the writer also identified the problems that the teacher faced in teaching English with CLT approach. To analyze the application of CLT by the English teacher, the writer used Brown (2007) theory that defined seven characteristics of CLT, they are some features that deal with communicative competence as the goal, the language technique to engage the learners in functional use of language, focusing on fluency, the use of language productively and receptively by the students, opportunities for learners to develop their own learning style, the teacher as facilitator, and the learner – centered class. In obtaining the data, the writer observed and recorded English teaching activity in four meetings. To complete the data, the writer also conducted an interview with the English teacher. In analyzing the data, the writer used descriptive analysis method. First, she transcribed all the collected data. Second, the writer analyzed the application of CLT features in every meeting. After analyzing the application of CLT by the English teacher, the writer found that the teacher did not apply all the CLT features in every meeting, such as the features that deal with accuracy – fluency, opportunity for the learners to develop their own learning style, the role of teacher as facilitator and guide, and the learner – centered classroom. Furthermore, the writer found that problems faced by the teacher involved several factors, such as learner’s motivation, time allocation, and text book. Those factors made some CLT features could not be applied in some meetings.
