Abstract

Grandmothers as the elder family member have a role not only in taking care of their grandchildren while the parents working, but also in promoting reading habit to their grandchildren. Reading habit can be promoted to children in early age by reading story books. Story books which designed attractively with colorful pictures can attract the children to read books. This study is aimed to find out the extra textual interaction employed by grandmothers in reading story books to their grandchildren aged 3 and 4 years old and the most frequent category employed by grandmothers. The data were collected by videotaping four grandmothers and their grandchildren in reading story books. Then, the writer analyzed the data using coding categories by Natsiopoulou et al. (2003). All of grandmothers employed the twelve categories. The data showed that the most frequent extra textual interaction employed by grandmothers was asking about names. It is because grandmothers wanted to know their grandchildren’s knowledge. By employing this category, grandmothers also could gain their grandchildren’s attention since grandmothers directly asked their grandchildren to look at the pictures on the books. The use of the story books with full of color and illustrations also stimulates grandmothers to ask more about names.
