Abstract

The study examines the main character in Ayu Utami’s Saman translated by Pamela Allen. This study discusses his personality and identity alteration which is associated with his childhood Oedipus complex and Castration. Two basic questions are, first, how does Saman’s Oedipus complex and castration portrayed in the novel? Second, how does Saman’s Oedipus complex and castration influence his life? Freudian psychoanalysis theory will be used as the main theory, especially the discussion of Oedipus complex, castration, castration anxiety, fixation, substitution and sublimation. This research will be a qualitative research where the data is taken from the novel Saman (English version), library research, journals, and other resources which are appropriate in conducting the analysis. This study discovers that Saman’s identity and personality alteration are associated with his childhood Oedipus complex and castration. In case of castration, Saman experiences many times castration start from the age of four year old until the age of thirty two. The first period of his castration happens within the age of four until twenty six years old. The second castration happens when he reaches thirty two. His castration results fixation which makes him negotiate defense mechanism namely substitution and sublimation. Saman’s Oedipus complex and castration give significant influence towards his sexual, religious and social life.
