Abstract

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a novel written by Mark Twain. One of many issues which are presented in the novel is about stereotypes of black people. The analysis aims to examine the practice of stereotype and the way to reverse it. The real character of the black has been reduced because of his race inferiority stereotypes. In order to give a fair judgment to a certain race, the writer analyzes the practice of stereotype in this analysis. The writer used qualitative method in doing analysis. The applied theory is stereotype theory by Stuart Hall. The stereotypes are presented by the black character in this novel, his name is Jim. Jim is attached with stereotypes as murderer, thief, superstitious, and simple minded. In order to reduce the negative sense of stereotypes, the analysis provides positive images of the blacks. In reversing the stereotypes, Jim is presented as a care and loving man, loyal and respectable.
