Abstract

The contradiction between the ideas of Javanese male potency and self control in public context against the actual reality of women taking control of family welfare in practice creates an ambiguous conception of the position of Javanese men as the head of their family, thus this condition leads Javanese men to become more protective of their status because the present situation, the increasing number of career women, seems to threaten their superior status in society. It is through narrative Javanese man can reveal the way they see and understand the values and conception surrounding their life because narrative is closely tied to human cognition representing how we see and are seen by the world. Moreover, narrative is also socially, linguistically, and culturally bound. This study aims at analyzing how the Javanese man structures his narrative and in what ways his narrative structures are different or similar to Labovian narrative structures. The data was collected from the narrative of a Javanese man life story by means of interview. By using semi-structured interview, the subject participated in this study narrated some important events in his life and then the data was coded on the basis of Labovian structural features of narrative.
