Abstract
A Spot of Bother (2006) is Mark Haddon’s first adult novel which was released after his first successful novel entitled The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time (2003). It is a complex story of an aging man’s turbulent inner life and his relationship with others. In this work, Haddon shows his ability of giving a wide insight into his characters. The characters seem very close to reality that makes the readers feel that they taught us about love and affection within a family – between spouse, parents-kids, and siblings. He also uses his acknowledgement of mental disorder well in this story. This study itself is an exposure of a family who never talks about their issues and feeling to each other, and all of the problems that arise because of this. The focus of the study is the central character (George Hall)’s and supported by other character’s inner conflicts concerning with their actions as reflected in the title of the story, A Spot of Bother. The writer uses Intrinsic Approach as the technique to analyze the story, which emphasized in characterization and conflict. Later it will be strengthened by Post Power Syndrome concept to examine George Hall as the main character. Besides, qualitative method is also used in conducting descriptive analysis and explaining events and actions in the story related to the identification process of the main character, as the impact of Post Power Syndrome. The research is conducted by collecting more information about related issue from several sources such as text books, articles, academic journals, and internet as the main electronic source. It is held to reveal the true nature of characters’ action, how they come to such an act and how they deal with it. As the final outcome, this xiv study concerns with how is the true inner side of George Hall revealed and how each of the family deals with their problems. In short, it tells us that no matter who we are and what we have done, we will always be a part of our family.
