Abstract

This study has two objectives. The first is to identify the language learning strategies mostly used by 2001 students of English Department, Airlangga University. The second objective is to know further whether there is correlation or not between language learning strategies and scores in four skills lessons. Basic theory that used by the writer is theory of Language Learning Strategies by Oxford (1990). And for the process of data collection, the writer used questionnaires of Oxford's Strategy Inventory for Language (SILL, 1990) to 41 respondents with purposive sampling with the characteristic is 2001 students who had already passed Auditory Comprehension 6, Speaking 6, Reading Comprehension 6 and Writing 3. The writer used Microsoft Excel of Windows to calculate the average score of Language Learning Strategies used by respondents. SPSS was used to calculate the correlation between Language Learning Strategies and the scores of respondents in their four language skills. The study found that compensation strategies are the first language learning strategies are mostly used by English Department students of Airlangga University of 2001 in four language skills, with the total average score of compensation strategies as 3.93. Out of 41 respondents, 17 respondents used compensation strategies as their language learning strategies. And for analysis of the hypothesis of the study, the independent variable symbolized with X represents the interval data. The dependent variable symbolized with Y represents the ordinal data. From statistical computation using method of Rank Spearman Correlation, The result of (p) value from all data analysis showed there is positive correlation between language learning strategies used by English Department students of year 2001 and their scores in their four language skills. But, after the hypothesis testing, t-value < 2.023, and it was known that the correlation is categorized as very low correlation. In conclusion, the result was proved that there is no significant correlation between language learning strategies used by English Department students of 2001 and scores in four language skills.
