Abstract
This study elaborates the exoticism process through the character of James Achilles Kirkpatrick as a young British Resident of Hyderabad in the perspective of William Dalrymple as the biography writer entitled White Mughals: Love and Betrayal in Eighteenth-Century India. This is one of literary work that tries to reveal that there was encountering process between East (Indian) and West (British), and they tried to adopt two cultures (British and Indian culture) at the same time as the effect of colonialism. Based on the main issue faced by James Achilles Kirkpatrick, the process of exoticism itself are initially colonizing, then admiring each culture, then finally cultural fusion or assimilation process eventually occurs. Using Post-colonial Exotic by Graham Huggan and Biographical Approach as the methodology, which is exoticism as part of Re-Orientalism, this study tries to construct the lack of binary opposition by Edward Said’s orientalism.
