Abstract

The phenomenon of conveying social criticisms in cartoon is interesting because it can be communicated implicitly through implicature. Implicature is the term to account for what a speaker can imply, suggest, or mean, as distinct from what the speaker literally says. The data were taken by transcribing the utterances of cartoon characters in cartoon books entitled Dari Presiden ke Presiden: first and second edition. The content of these books is the collections of selected editorial cartoons in daily and weekly Kontan which contain social criticisms of various socio-political-economy problems. In this study the writer used qualitative research approach and applied Grice’s theory of Implicature, Cooperative principle and maxims. The flouting of maxim, which gives rise to implicature, occurred 17 times. From the analysis, The most flouted maxim is the maxim of quality which occurred 6 times or 35.29 % and referred to figures of speech such as metaphor, irony and hyperbole, the maxim of quantity and manner are flouted as many as 4 times each or 23.53 %, the maxim of relation is flouted 3 times or 17.65 %. The findings showed that the flouting of maxim in cartoon character’s utterances conveys social criticisms and it is applied in the utterance in order to emphasize the intended meaning or implicature.
