Abstract
This study focuses on the translation strategies on swearwords in the Four Brothers’ movie. In this study, the writer attempts to point out that in translating swearwords in a movie there are several translation strategies preffered. This study belongs to qualitative study in which the data of the study is Four Brothers movie dialogues and their swearword translation. There are one hundred and ninety eight swearwords expression found in this movie. The result of the swearword categories shows that there are five out of seven categories of swearword proposed by Hughes and Trudgill found in the dialogues namely, anatomical term, excretory term, animal term, general term, and religion term. The result of interpretation shows that there are three out of eight translation strategies proposed by Mona Baker practiced in translating swearword in Four Brothers movie dialogues namely, translation by omission, translation by more neutral or less expressive word, and translation by cultural substitution. Therefore, it can be concluded that this movie tends to omit the swearwords in the translation when it is considered as unimportant and only emphasizing on the speaker’s feeling.
