Abstract

This study is aiming to discuss about the interpretation of dream of the main character Ebenezer Scrooge in Charles Dickens’s novel, A Christmas Carol. This novel depicts how the main character, Ebenezer Scrooge, change his personality throughout the story. The issues that will be discussed within this thesis are the meaning of Scrooge’s dream and how Scrooge’s dreams signify his life. Within this novel, Dickens uses the spirits as symbols to make the main character; Scrooge sees the areas of past, present, and future. As he sees his life as a whole, he realizes what he needs most, his personality change into good personality. It is the most interesting part in the novel that should be analyzed, and the results of the analysis will show the relation between the dreams and the life that Scrooge has. From this study, the writer hopes that the readers will see dream from different points of view, and see dreams as things that may be good for the readers’ mind and soul. The conclusion of this research is that the change is achieved by the addition of some real and unreal situations that Scrooge lived through in the past along with the possible events of the future. Along with some real and imaginary events, Scrooge succeeds complete the mission to be peace with others and especially with himself through his dreams.
