Abstract

This study examines how Maryam and Farah as polygamous wives live in patriarchal culture. Patriarchy is a culture that privilege men’s position over women. In patriarchal culture, women are supposed to be feminine, modesty, submissive and frail. These women are oppressed and considered as the subordinate class while men are considered more superior. Some men even have the authority to have more than one wife or well known as polygamy. This situation shows that the position of women is very weak. As a result, some women suffer because they cannot get their husband fully and must share with other wives. In analyzing the issues, the writer uses theory of feminism by Betty Friedan in her book Feminine Mystique. The results of the study show that there are some operations of patriarchy such as Domestication of Women, The Concept of Ideal women, and Polygamy Matter. In this condition, Both Maryam and Farah have different reactions toward patriarchal culture and it is influenced by their background of life. The result of the study also show that Polygamy as the product of patriarchy has some effects for Maryam and Farah, including the competition between wives and sufferings experienced by the wives. Both of them suffer painful, depression to live in that condition. They do not have any right to express their feeling since their position is subordinated.
