Abstract

The practice of colonialism long time ago divided the society into two, the colonizers as the superior and the colonized as the inferior. It is quite possible that there will be someone who stands in the middle of those two sides, as stated by Bhabha as in-between-ness. This position can cause further effects in his life such as double consciousness and displacement. In J.M. Coetzee’s novel entitled Waiting for the Barbarians, the superior is represented by the Empire and the inferior is represented by the barbarians, and the Magistrate is standing right in the middle of these two different sides. There are two points that are going to be analyzed in this study: first is how the in-between-ness is being experienced by the Magistrate and the second one is how the Magistrate experiences the effects of his in-between-ness. In analyzing the novel, the Postcolonial theories about inbetween- ness, double consciousness, and displacement by Homi K. Bhabha are used to support the analysis. This study finds that the Magistrate character experiences the in-between-ness which causes his double consciousness and displacement.
