Abstract
Alfred Tennyson’s ‘Ulysses’ is one of the most controversial poems. The main character that was used in the poem is a well known character appeared in other literary works and the most known one in Homer’s ‘Odyssey’ and ‘Illiad’. People have very little knowledge about Ulysses’s life after the war in Troy as he was portrayed as patriotic hero who faced everything that stood in his way. In the poem he was portrayed quite the opposite way, as he was alienated. New Criticism theory will be applied in order to analyze the poem. The study will be focusing on giving description on the analysis of the formal elements, linguistic devices and organic unity of the poem, in order to analyze the poem and to expose the estrangement suffered by Ulysses. The formal elements of the poem, support the finding of the estrangement suffered by Ulysses as in the poem he was miserably leaving his people and family in order to chase his self satisfaction, while he felt that he was not as free as Achilles and the other hero he met during the war and that he was not credited of his work by his people.
