Abstract

This study was conducted to find out the ability of an adult with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in producing types of sentence patterns in his language. Specifically, this study was aimed at investigating the types of sentences based on its structure and types of sentence patterns produced by the participant. To gather the needed data, recording and observing the participant’s utterances was conducted. The participant’s utterances were transcribed into orthographic transcription to analyze the data. The sentences produced by the participant were grouped into the types of sentences based on its structure. The result showed that the participant produced simple sentences and complex sentences. The sentence patterns of the sentences produced by the participant were also identified. Based on the types of sentence patterns in his language, the participant was able to produce 16 types of sentence patterns. Six of them are mentioned in theory of Alwi et.al. They are subject – predicate (SP), subject – predicate – object (SPO), subject – predicate – complement (SPC), subject – predicate – adverb (SPA), subject – predicate – object – complement (SPOC) and subject – predicate – object – adverbial (SPOA). The most frequent types of sentences produced by the participant is simple sentences with a type of sentence patterns SP. The finding shows that the language disorder of an adult with hyperactive syndrome may have an impact on the processing of producing a sentence, which involves a choice between a simple and a complex sentence.
