Abstract

This thesis focuses on how Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary 8th edition (OALD8) and Collins Cobuild Advanced Dictionary 6th edition (CCAD6) highlight their main grammatical patterns for the words in the Academic Word List (AWL). AWL is intended for teachers and students as a reference in writing an academic text. The list is based on the Academic Corpus of Written English (Academic Corpus), which was specifically compiled for the research with 3,513,330 running words that cover written academic texts. The list is divided into 10 sub list. However, I focus on the first sub list which contains 60 academic words with the highest frequency. These 60 words are classified into four word classes: noun, verb, adjective and words with multiple word classes. This thesis analyses the nouns and verbs because they have the most number of the word classes in the AWL. The grammatical information of the words regarding the verbs and nouns in the first sub list of AWL are analyzed based on the word class, „pattern illustration‟, definition and example. The result shows that there are similarities and differences of grammatical information for the nouns and verbs in the first sub list of AWL provided in CCAD6 and OALD8. There are 14 words which have similar grammatical information in both dictionaries. OALD8 provides more grammatical information for 10 words. CCAD6 supplies three words with more grammatical information. In both dictionaries, there are also 6 words which the grammatical information that complements to each other.
