Abstract
This study digs into women’s struggle against traditional gender roles which still cast them as submissive, dependent, irrational, emotional, weak, and so forth. In this study, the writer analyzes the women who against to get married and to get a freedom from the short stories “Taking a Husband” and “In Broad Daylights” which are compiled in Under The Red Flag book by Ha Jin. This study is using feminist criticism for the analysis. It focuses on the first wave phenomena of feminism that highlights the inequalities between the men and women and use Mary Wollstonecraft’s depiction of women as an oppressed class regardless of social hierarchy. The writer found several findings in her analysis: characters of women, their struggle to traditional gender roles, and the reason behind their struggle. From all of those, the writer can conclude that women struggle to have what they want and get better life in family and society but they are still affected by the old-ages stereotypes in China.
