Abstract

The Things They Carried is Novel written by Tim O’Brien. This Novel is an autobiography of the author about his experience when became a soldier in Vietnam War. Many people acknowledge the quality of The Things They Carried. The story in this novel describes about the struggle of Tim O’Brien to overcome his war fear. Of course, when becoming a soldier in Vietnam War, he encountered many obstacles and problems that he must deal with. It is not an easy task to deal with War Area since the soldier can be killed by the enemy, and they must ready to kill the enemy too. One hesitation or wrong movement done by the soldier may lead them into dead. O’Brien felt these pressures too, but he had no fear to face them. He has pride as a soldier, and it makes him never give up to struggle until the end. Therefore, this study is meant to analyze the struggle that Tim O’Brien do by using intrinsic theory. With this theory, the writer will analyze the struggle of character through plot, setting, and characterization, as well as the theme of the novel. After analyzing this novel, there are several findings that the writer obtains. The writer finds the detail of O’Brien’s Real-Life struggle presented in the novel to overcome war fear, as well as the significances of his struggle.
