Abstract
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen released in 2007 tells about the daily life of railroad circus named Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. As represented in this novel, in a railroad circus, animal rights were unfulfilled because of their nomad life. Rosie, the elephant, as the main character in this story experienced human mistreatment. The writer analyzes the portrayal of animal rights and the ideology constructed within the novel. By using Ecocriticism theory suggested by Cheryll B. Glotfelty and Harold Fromm (1996) and supporting theory on animal rights by Tamara L. Roleff and Jenifer A. Hurley (1999), the writer found several findings, there are; animals in the entertainment industry were abused, violence towards animal especially elephant, the instinct of animal in railroad circus, killing animal by using euthanasia method, alcohol as a substitute of water for animals in a railroad circus. Thus, those all finding can be concluded that based on an ecocentrism as an ideologgy in this study, the animals deserves to have a better life, and animals have the same rights as human to be free from suffering, tortured, and abused.
