Abstract

Through her novel, The Woman Warrior: Memoirs of A Girlhood Among Ghosts, Maxine Hong Kingston described her problems of growing up in Chinatown in California during the 1950s. The protagonist of the novel is actually the writer herself. The novel presents the clash of cultures between American and Chinese. The differences between Chinese and American culture are very rigid until the protagonist feels confused about her identity: whether she is Chinese or American, which values she has to choose and believe. While trying to reconcile her Chinese cultural heritage with her emerging sense of herself in America, she also encounters racial discrimination and language problems. The writer wants to analyze the protagonist's identity confusion triggered by cultural differences between Chinese and American, and struggle to find her identity. In analyzing the thesis, the writer uses psychological approach supported by Erik Erikson's theory of the development of human personality, because searching for identity is one of the major problems undergone by the protagonist. The thesis is based on library research. Other relevant references are used to support the analysis. The writer uses descriptive analytic method in the analysis. Finally, by understanding the two cultures and determining the protagonist's position in society, she is able to find her identity.
