Abstract

For most of recorded time and in most society, women and men are differentiated into separated spheres; men in the public realm of business, industry, and politics, and women in the private realm of the home and charity. This condition is portrayed in ha Levin's novel The Stepford Wives. The spreading of women's movement affects the wives in Stepford. It makes their husbands discontent and take a decision to change their wives into robots. They turn to be beautiful, obedient, and submissive wives for their husbands. In analyzing The Stepford Wives, the writer will use the first chapter of The Feminine Mystique by Betty Friedan as its theory since it contains sufficient data about women's condition. Other data about women's condition is also used to support the analysis. Furthermore, the writer will analyze the domestication of women. At this point, the writer will try to reveal that housework becomes women's job since it is in the domestic area. Besides, social life of women will also be analyzed in the first topic. Moreover, the image of perfect women as wives becomes the second topic of this analysis. The writer will describe about the construction of attitude and appearance of perfect women according to patriarchal system. Finally, the defeat of women in facing patriarchal system gives an understanding that women can never have the same position to men
