Abstract

This study focuses on analyzing the use of cohesive devices in ten students' Indonesian narratives. The aim of this study is to identify the cohesive devices and reveal the influence of the use of cohesive devices on the coherence of the narratives. The framework used to identify cohesive devices in this study is the types of Indonesian cohesive devices proposed by Ramlan. This study is qualitative study since the data is presented descriptively. The participants of the study are ten students at the fourth and fifth grades of SDN Kertajaya XIII/219, Surabaya. The data were collected from 22 to 26 May 2006. Based on the text analysis, the study found that the ten students use all types of cohesive devices: reference, substitution, ellipsis, conjunction, and reiteration. It also shows what cohesive devices occur most in their narratives. However, their use of cohesive devices sometimes is not accurate. Even though some cohesive devices-personal substitution and conjunction-were used inaccurately, the narratives remain coherent.
