Abstract
Nowadays, training industry is needed by people. Many companies and institutions are interested in training industry in order to improve the spirit, the knowledge, and the skill of their employees in doing the job. The central part of the training is a trainer who has an ability to transfer his knowledge and skill to his trainees. Besides transferring the training materials, he should maintain the concentration of his trainees by making ice breakers, games, or jokes. This study focuses on the jokes in Quantum Parenting training that was held by KPI (Konsorsium Pendidikan Islam) Surabaya. This study was conducted to identify the floutings of maxims that can cause humorous effects and examine how the flouting can cause humorous effects in training activity. Grice's theory of cooperative principle is used to explain this analysis further. The cooperative principle is practiced by people to make the conversation succeed. The participants must be brief, just the facts and do not wander around when they express their ideas. The final results of this study are that there are only three maxims are flouted in training activity: maxim of quality, maxim of relevance, and maxim of manner. Those floutings of the maxims can cause humorous effect because of the untruth information, irrelevant arguments, and unclear illustration which are given by trainer during the discussion. The results above are suitable with the Grice's theory that the people's understanding of the intended message of the utterances not only depends on the words and organization in isolation but also on the text and the knowledge of the worlds of the people's thoughts.
