Abstract

There are a great number of languages in the world. This fact brings some problem in the process of communication between people from different languages and cultures, because a great number of people understand only their own language. Because the contact between people from all over the world is unavoidable, people are motivated to learn translation. In this study, the writer analyzes the translation of the utterances in a film or it is called the subtitle. This study is aimed at finding out the translation methods and the most frequently method applied in the English subtitle of an Indonesian film `Berbagi Suami'. The writer uses qualitative approach because the data is in the form of words. The writer starts collecting the data by comparing the original film script in the script book with the utterances in the film. Then, the writer writes the English subtitle in the first part of the film and makes a table to put and compare the Indonesian utterances and the English subtitles. Meanwhile, in analyzing the data, the writer classifies the data based on Peter Newmark's translation methods. After getting the classification, the writer analyzes each translation method applied in the subtitles. Finally she interprets the result of the analysis. The result shows that the translation methods applied are communicative translation, faithful translation; free translation, and adaptation. In addition, the most frequently method applied is communicative translation.
