Abstract

This study attempts to investigate the syntactic complexity produced by SPMB and PMDK students of English Department Airlangga University in Surabaya, in expository essay. The main objective of this study is to investigate the significant differences of English syntactic complexity produced by SPMB and PMDK students of English Department Airlangga University in subordinate clauses (nominal, adverbial, and relative clauses), T-unit, and clausal density. In order to gain the objective of the study, quantitative approach was employed to investigate the significant differences of syntactic complexity in expository essay written by SPMB and PMDK students. To gain the result of this study, first of all, the number of subordinate clauses, T-Unit and clausal density were calculated. Second, the mean scores of subordinate clauses, T-unit, and clausal density were found; and by using t-test formula, then F-test analysis was applied before deciding the result of t-test, after all those steps, the result of t-test was found.
