Abstract

Babel is one of the best Hollywood films which was released in 2006. The film’s setting took place in four different sites of the world: America, Mexico, Morocco, and Japan. Besides the setting, this film also has four storylines which move on relatively at the same time; moreover, those are connected each other by gun presence. The aims of this thesis are to find the gun representation in four storylines through semiotic theory and to find the intertext correlation between the film and the previous work entitled Tower of Babel in Holy Bible. The writer used qualitative method in doing the analysis. The applied theory is semiotics theory by Roland Barthes. Intertextual theory is also used to find the relation between the film and the previous text in Holy Bible. The result of the analysis shows that the appearance of gun in the film can be represented in some terms, the medium that brings understanding and the medium that brings suffer. There are also correlation between the title of the film, Babel, with the original story of Tower of Babel in the Holy Bible, the expansion and conversion idea of the tower and the languages used in the film.
