Abstract

This study attempts to discuss conflicts raised in the novel The pianist written by Wladyslaw Szpilman. The novel portrays conflicts, particularly a survival. The main character in the novel is Wladyslaw Szpilman. This novel tells the based the author experience in the Second World War. In his survival there are many experiences that can analyse. In analyzing the conflicts the writer uses the intrinsic theory or approach to analyze the character that is the most important part of a literary work. Conflict is not easy to determine, but in this study the writer uses the theory of conflict, suggested by Brooks, C., Purser, J.T in his book An Approach to Literature, Holman C. Hugh in his book A Handbook to Literature and Stanford, J.A.in his book Study Responding to Literature order to study Szpilman’s conflicts in the novel. Wellek, Rene and Warren, Austin, that the concepts of conflict theory are divided into two subgroups. They are external conflict and internal conflict that are faced by Szpilman in order to keep his life survived. Szpilman has two conflicts in his experience to keep survived. . The first reason is related with external conflict that includes Man vs. Man (Szpilman vs. the German troops), Man vs. society (Szpilman vs. the war), and Man vs. nature (Szpilman vs. hunger). And the second reason is internal conflict that included Szpilman’s feeling in his survival. There are many emotions in the way of Szpilman survival; fear, doubts, inhabitation. The second focus of this study is the way of Szpilman to survive, the way Szpilman to cling his life in his inner and outer conflict.
