Abstract

Amaranta is one of seven-generation characters in Gabriel G. Márquez’s One Hundred Years of Solitude. Each character in this novel has been created with different personality although repetitive characteristic which is inherited cannot be avoided. This study attempts to analyze the development of Amaranta’s personality in order to identify whether it was a healthy or unhealthy personality growth. Therefore, the writer uses theory of personality which is suggested by Erik Erikson. In conducting the study, the writer will elaborate Amaranta’s stages of development that have been examined through Erikson’s psychosocial stages of development and occurrences of crisis. Through this study, the writer has the findings: (1) there are several influencing factors in determining Amaranta’s personality, especially those which are related with parents and family; (2) the personality growth that is seen through Erikson’s psychosocial stages portrays the unbalanced outcomes; and (3) Amaranta’s behavior reflects in the way she resolves the crises. Library and online researches are done in gaining knowledge and finding supporting theories that are appropriate with the discussion.
