Abstract

This is a study of phonological acquisition, especially on phonological processes in the speech production made by a three year old Javanese child. It is intended to find out the types of phonological processes that occur in Javanese child‟s speech production. The writer took the data from 240 minutes recordings of speech delivered by a child aged three years old. To analyze the data, the writer uses phonological process theory proposed by Ingram. In taking the data, the writer took naturalistic observation by using non-direct participants. The conversations were then transcribed into phonetic transcription. Based on the data analysis, the writer found that not all of phonological process in Ingram‟s theory occurs in the speech of three year old child. There are only seven from twelve types of processes that occurred. The types of substitution are stopping, fronting, and gliding. Types of assimilatory processes are consonant harmony which includes velar assimilation and denasalization. Types in the syllable structure are cluster reduction, deletion of final consonant, and deletion of unstressed syllable. In addition, the writer also found three other phonological processes which do not reflect Ingram‟s theory. They are lateralization, nasalization, and deletion with retention. The writer concludes that the child acquired most consonants and all of the vowels but there are still several sounds which have not been yet acquired by the child.
