Abstract

People with mental retardation encounter difficulties in acquiring language because their delayed development in language. Besides, Bernstein (1985) stated that the most serious delay development of mentally retarded people is the language development. Then, this situation affects their writing skills, including writing the active and passive sentences. Regarding this phenomenon, this study aims to find out the verb construction in the active and passive sentences that produced by mentally retarded high school students with IQ range 52-70 (mild category). This study was done by asking the participants to write their daily activities, and made it as the data. The data was analyzed using the active-passive of Indonesian sentences proposed by Alwi et al. (2003). The writer found that intransitive verb with non-obligatory complement is the most frequently verb construction that appeared in the participants’ writings and the least frequently appeared is intransitive verb with obligatory complement. The verb itself is mostly appeared in the active sentence and in its base form. The writer concludes that the participants tend to produce active sentence and less difficult sentence in their writings.
