Abstract

American Dream had an influence in attracting millions of immigrants to America. The Jungle tells about the struggle of Lithuanian family to seek for wealth and success in America. American Dream contributes a lot in influencing this family to live and work in America. This study attempts to discuss the struggle of Jurgis Rudkus as an immigrant worker to realize the American Dream as portrayed in The Jungle. By using the library research, the writer also attempts to reveal how American Dream operates in the industrial society of Chicago. In analyzing those issues, the concept of Ideology and Ideological State Apparatuses as propesed by Louis Althusser are used. This study finds that American Dream is an ideology that is merely intended to flourish the American industries by attracting people like Jurgis Rudkus to live and work in America. The immigrant workers as the victim of this ideology try to fight against the established order in which they are always oppressed by participating in the Socialist Party as the form of the class struggle
