Abstract

Code switching in ELT (English Langugae Teaching) classroom has been a controversial topic in the field of linguistics and education (Strupeck Anne, 2006). Due to the frequently uses of code switching in ELT classroom, this study set out to learn more about the code-switching used by the teacher in English classrooms in the 2nd grade of SMK Prapanca 2 Surabaya. The objectives of this study are to investigate a) the types of code switching used by the teacher, b) the functions of code switching used b the teacher in English classroom. Recordings and interviews were used for data collecting; teacher’s utterances were recorded and transcripts were produced. The teachers were interviewed to find out more about the functions of teacher’s code switching in the classroom. The result of the study shows that (1) there are three types of code switching; extra-sentential or tag switching (6,15%), inter-sentential code-switching (27,69%), and intra-sentential code-switching (67,69%) which was the most frequent finding and (2) the functions are listed as topic switch (31,25%), affective functions (25%), and repetitive functions (43,75%). The result of the interview shows that the dominant function is also repetitive function. It is used to make the meaning clear, so the students could understand what the teacher means.
